The proposed Mid-Currituck Bridge—long seen as a solution to northern Outer Banks traffic—is now in doubt as costs surge. Latest estimates put the project at roughly $1.2 billion, leaving a major funding gap that tolls and current state funding can’t cover.
State officials say the project is not financially viable as it stands. That has sparked discussion about pulling committed funds and pushing the project back into North Carolina’s prioritization process—where it could face indefinite delay or effectively be shelved.
Despite the financial hurdles, progress has been made. Key environmental permits were secured in 2025, and financing options, including public-private partnerships, are still being explored. However, major steps remain, including final funding, design completion, and contractor selection.
Once targeted for construction as early as 2026, with completion in the early 2030s, that timeline is now highly uncertain.
The proposed seven-mile span across Currituck Sound is intended to ease peak-season congestion and improve hurricane evacuation. For now, its future depends on one thing: closing a substantial funding gap.
