The Mid-Currituck Bridge

A bridge will stabilize the local economy and promote year-round prosperity

In my view, the proposed bridge represents a natural and timely step in Corolla’s long-term development. Beyond easing peak-season traffic and improving evacuation options during storms, the bridge has the potential to positively reshape the character and sustainability of the community.

Improved access to the Hampton Roads area would make Corolla far more appealing to retirees and year-round residents—especially those who love the area but are hesitant due to the long drive for emergency or specialized medical care. Easier access would remove one of the biggest barriers to full-time living in Corolla. I believe that an expanded full-time core population is critical for Corolla’s prosperity.

We saw a glimpse of this future during the COVID period a few years ago. Many owners moved into their homes year-round, and buyers began purchasing properties as primary residences rather than just vacation homes. The impact on the local economy was immediate and tangible.

Restaurants reinvested in their spaces, refreshed interiors, and expanded offerings. Other local businesses followed suit—upgrading facilities, repaving parking lots, extending operating seasons, and retaining staff longer into the year. Seasonal workers stayed because there was consistent demand beyond the summer months. The community felt more vibrant, connected, and sustainable.

A bridge could help support that same balance by strengthening the shoulder seasons and reducing the boom-and-bust cycle of overcrowded summers followed by too-quiet winters. Introducing more residents and visitors throughout the year would allow restaurants and local businesses to operate on steadier, more predictable footing.  Simply put, businesses cannot thrive on half a year of income. 

Done thoughtfully, the bridge has the potential to support a healthier, more resilient future for Corolla. This prosperity will increase the area's appeal to both residents and visitors by raising the quality of the year-round living experience here.
